Many views in this fastest growing precinct retain memories of the close-knit
neighborhood of scattered homesite dwellings such as that of late Jim Shields,
shown below with visitors. Some of the original homesteaders still live
in the area, and tell stories about Russian Jack, the man who homesteaded
in what is now Russian Jack Park. The children traveled to Airport Heights
Elementary School in those early years. These forests were where several
important political families raised their children, notably Anchorage’s
current Mayor, raised here with his brothers and sisters by late Congressman
Nick Begich and Mom, Peggy.
This precinct is bordered on the south by the platted section of Pine
Street (undeveloped wetlands), on the south by Northern Lights Boulevard,
on the east by Boniface. Parkway and on the north by 20th Avenue
as it passes by the southern boundary of Russian Jack Park.
Not only do neighbors have ready access to Russian Jack Park, but an
lovely undeveloped birch grove, James Vernon Nash park (left), faces
winding Wesleyan Drive. This park is adjacent to a more recently
established portion of the neighborhood.
